Consistency Over Intensity: The Real Key to Fitness Success

Consistency Over Intensity: The Real Key to Fitness Success

Hi Everyone

I'm going to give you a goal, let's say you have a goal to lose 15-20 lbs in a long period of time, how do you attack it? Short intensity or High Consistency?

My answer would be high consistency and why?

High Consistency is really tailored to your current life schedule, you may not have a consistent 2 hour window to properly focus on mobility, cardio and lifting. You may have an hour after work or your 45 min lunch break to do some form of movement.

Short intensity is not sustainable because it comes and goes and it's factored by proper sleep and nutrition. While it's ideal that we are perfect in both aspects, for most people it's not realistic to be perfect however it's realistic to be consistent.

What is the one thing people get wrong about fitness?

The one thing that people get wrong about fitness at the beginning is the idea of creating a high intensity all or nothing mindset to their routine rather than creating a consistent mindset that can create results through a longer period of time. We lean more towards creating high intensity because of our constant comparison to others and a "microwave society" mindset.

What do I mean by that?

Let's go back to the goal in the beginning, losing 20 lbs in a certain amount of time,

The short and intense way would be doing a fad diet along with two a days of cardio/lifting for 3 months with minimal rest in between workouts. Yes you'll lose weight fast but it won't be a sustainable option because of the high risk of injury/burnout along with a high chance of returning to old eating habits. The long and consistent way is to plan everything out according to your schedule, small repeatable effort leads to long term success.

This will take time, sometimes you're going to plateau because not every week is the same as addressed earlier, one week you can be at a high and everything goes right. Next week everything feels heavier. The process is not a straight line at the end of the day.

Consistency and Intensity: How can you find a proper balance?

A proper balance can be achieved through understanding that consistency is the foundation and Intensity creates the results.

Everyone is different, we don't all live the same type of lives and don't have the same amount of time to workout. I preface this because part of my living involves being in a gym 5-6 days of the week and 4 of those days I'm lifting for at least 1.5 hrs while maintaining a high protein diet and 6-8 hrs of sleep. Most people that are not personal trainers/coaches don't have that kind of free time. However use the time that you have to set up a routine that you can stay consistent with. If that means you only have 30 minutes in a packed gym and can only do a quick interval routine with 4-6 exercises or 60 minutes in a private studio supervised by a trainer with a 6 week plan. If you can use the time wisely with a consistent rate of intensity and most importantly loving any and/or all forms of "the process" that is when you'll see your results come through.
